Schematic of loss of negative feedback cycle following repeated stress exposure. Persistent release of CRH and ACTH results in persistent secretion of cortisol from the adrenal gland. This dysregulated secretion of cortisol fails to inhibit CRH and ACTH action (depicted by red “X” marks), thus failing to self-control its release.
